I finally got a new computer. This time I got a Dell and it seems to run quite fast :-) It's at least 20 times faster than my old mac. I'm getting used to WindowsXP and things are starting to settle down.

Yesterday I took a look at issues with text entry. What happens is that the whole textpane will get redrawn for each character entry, which makes it slow and painfull to edit large and complex text. I found the main culpit of the problem in TextMorph>>fit which is were the extent of the textpane is calculated and invaliditated after each keystroke. Seems like some optimation could be done there.

Massive amount of posts on the Squeak-dev list. I've spent some time reading through that. Marcus Denker put together a BFAV 3.9 image which I downloaded. Thanks, Marcus. I had some trouble getting the BFAV to download the archive in a fresh image lately so this was a nice effort that saved me some time.

Not much Squeaking today. I took a look at BFAV and not much happened. I think BFAV readability could be improved if we made a seperate tab for posts needing more work or wich have conflicts with updates.

I have from time to time felt compelled to enhance the web browser Scamper with various features like tables and gui etc. Web browsers are some of the tools I use the most on my computer and it would be nice to do more from Squeak without leaving the environment. I start out with this in mind but get grossed out by the standard and text morph quircks and so on. My last attempt on a table morph used a nice package for table layout by some french guy. I'll see if I can package it up and post it on SqueakMap one day.

Most of my Squeak work lately has been with the commenting of fixes and enhancements using the BFAV. It was a little difficult in to get started, I don't know the system that well, but just reading thrugh the code and the comments it turned out to be quite fun and I learned quite a bit about various places in the image.
I recomend other people to pick up the habit of reviewing and commenting on fixes and enhancements. Not only will you learn stuff, you can help bring the system forward.
