Name: Jim Menard

Notes:

I play with Squeak when time allows, because I love Smalltalk (and Ruby, and Objective-C). I get paid to code in Java, and sneak in a bit of Ruby from time to time. (Update: I get paid to write Ruby, too.) I use Mac OS X.

I wrote a PostgreSQL interface for Squeak; you can find it on my "downloads" page off of my home page. It worked under 3.4 and 3.5, but I don't think it works with the new socket code. I have not yet had time to update it.

For the Web app I'm developing, I've chosen Java with Tapestry as a front-end. It shares a few attributes with Seaside, like building the application from components rather than embedding code in HTML pages. I'm hoping that after this project is done I can reproduce it in Seaside for my own edification.

The app is a "photo wiki". The PHP prototype someone else built is here.

I'm consulting for a startup. I've inherited a Java-based server and have extended it in the same language. It's an interesting project, though I don't know how much I should say about it.

I have the opportunity to redesign the whole thing. It needs an architecture review at the very least, and I've been given a free hand to do whatever I think is necessary. (I'm the only person working on the server). It doesn't necessarily need to be rewritten. I'm really tempted to try to recreate it in Squeak. Seaside looks perfect for the Web interface. The problem is, I don't know enough about the potential pitfalls or even all of the available tools and techniques.

I'd need a mentor. I'm not asking for one; redesigning the whole thing is Squeak is probably not a good idea anyway. It would be a hell of a learning experience, though.

At least two people use my PostgreSQL interface. Cool.

I modified the socket code slightly to use Socket>>waitForConnectionFor: instead of Socket>>waitForConnectionUntil:.

Since I'm running OS X Panther (10.3), I can't use Squeak right now. None of the version of 3.6, including John McIntosh's 3.6.1beta2 or 3.6.1beta3 work for me.
