After several months' absence, playing with Squeak again. I'm really excited to see avi's Unstable Squeak project, and to see the number of fixes and enhancements in the 3.8-alpha unstable updates stream. Plus Diegos' new look for Squeak 3.8 is just plain fun.

I've got a good feeling about all this.

BFAV 2.09

BFAV 2.08 had a severe bug. So I released 2.09 with an emergency fix this morning, and deleted 2.08.

I really don't intend to do another BFAV release.

BFAV 2.08

So I was doing some reviewing of posts that Lex and Ken had cc'd me on, and noticed that after the BFAV 2.07 revamp, the Attachments and Changesets panes in the reviewer notepad were not updating correctly. So I fixed and tested just that, and then added BFAV 2.08 to SqueakMap.

2.08 is not marked as a "published" release yet, because I want the new maintainers to test it out and see if it's ready to go. I'll ask Frank and Tom to mark it as "published" when they deem it ready. In the meantime, I'm sure Frank and Tom would appreciate feedback from test pilots for 2.08 :)

What next?

Well, right now I'm learning Erlang, for something completely different :)

But I'm really looking forward to my next Squeak project, just not sure what it will be. SeeThroughTalk looks like lots and lots of fun; I'm seriously looking forward to that. I'd like to play with the "fun" side of Squeak - the kid stuff :) So I'm looking forward to when Tweak is publically available; I think that will be the point where I finally start playing with eToys.

And of course I'd like to play with Spoons, and spend some time quality time scribbling on a clean Slate, if you will... :)

56 updates!

Just updated my reference 3.7a image to 5763 and was really pleased to see how many updates were from reviewing work done via the BFAV. Also really pleased to see that the Harvesting Party idea is already bearing fruit.

The BFAV definitely doesn't yet do all that it could do, but at this point it fulfills the dream/hope/wish I had a couple of years ago for an effective harvesting tool that the Squeak community would use to improve Squeak.

BFAV 2.07 is out!

My announcement to the Squeak list hasn't come through yet, but the package release has been published to SqueakMap.

I intend for this to be my last BFAV release. It's kind of bitter-sweet. This is the first time that I've ever done a hand-off of an open-source product that I "owned". I'm excited to be moving on to new things, but I've put a lot of time, energy and passion into building this tool -- it's difficult to let go.

FrankShearar and TomKoenig have signed up to integrate fixes and enhancements from the Squeak community for the BFAV. I'm excited to see the good things they'll do with the app, and grateful to them for taking on this responsibility.

I've been thinking for a while about writing an article for SqP about what I've learned from building the BFAV; now seems like a particularly apropos time to do it. Expect that in the next few weeks.
