Being that free time is more and more rare to have, I decided to post almost only on my main blog http://germanarduino.blogspot.com trying my best effort to write an understandable English, to share Squeak things with the Squeak community.

Trying to test the newest Squeak and Seaside versions I developed a tiny app that show the people of SqueakPeople grouped by its certifications.

The example was also to use a web page as data source, a common need in some business applications on these days.

To see the app working press here .

If time permits I plan some additional features and, of course, comments or suggestions are welcomed.

Squeak in Business

After a long time without posting here (ok, I must admit, I don't likes to write in English) I'm back :)

I've added my project A1-Business CMS, that is in its firsts versions.

The web site, by now, is only in Spanish, but I think that screenshots may be understood.

The source code isn't (yet) freely available, because I've not decided yet about this question. I'm developing A1 with one main reason: To earn money.

A1 started as a custom project to a local real estate agency and after evaluate another (easy) possibilities, as use some ready-made php script, I decided to start developing my own "micro" CMS being that an idea I was considerating from a time ago.

A1 has yet a lot of ideas to incorporate, as documentation to write and important decisions to take (as licensing by example). By now I'm going slowly, taking care of each step, and trying to make a good solution to my actual customer. In the same time, I'm learning all time about several things of having a squeak image running in a web hosting shared server.

Squeak isn't the only topic to learn to offer a solution as this (I'm selling not the software else the service of having the software running in a server, "a la ASP Application Service Provider)".

In the maintime I'm evaluating another possibility: offer a website with A1 multiuser, were each user may configure his own site, sharing the system in a non-exclusive way (as DabbleDB offer).

Then, I've decided incorporate A1 in squeakpeople list of projects to share my thinking and ideas (I think that is more appropriate here than in squeak-dev) to hear the ideas of the community.

I love Squeak and want to work in Squeak, but at the same time, I need to earn money from my work. Then the A1 idea (sell the software as service with a monthly fee) appeared suddenly and I'm trying it.

Well, is the A1 history and I'm really interested in hear your opinions.

As ever, sorry because my English is really poor.

I'm developing a web interface to access legacy data from a MS SQL Server database. To access it I'm heavily using ODBC for Squeak, from my friend Diego Gómez Deck.

Today, I've packaged the original ODBC from Diego, adding a decimal fix from Chris Cunningham and published the new release to Squeak 3.8.

I hope works ok, at least in the images were I've tested, all worked ok.

Smalltalk and Squeak have really a lot of things fascinating, but I think that the most important and valuable thing that a person can find in Squeak is the Squeak People. Lots of friendly persons ready to help whichever need.

One of this persons, Cees de Groot has hosted in his server my product Promoter only to permit me to make some tests, taking in account that no Squeak hosting is available in the normal shared hosting providers.

Another friendly Squeaker Ken Causey has helped me with some Linux remote commands to setup mi product.

Really thanks to both, Cees by the server and Ken by the help.

In the middle of April I've switched to Dolphin Smalltalk to develop a payed project.

I like Dolphin but I'm not happy of abandon Squeak (this new project will take several months) but exactly this question is IMHO the main drawback of Squeak: Isn't ready to develop business applications, at least not as the customers of Windows SO are expecting.

Will be back asap.

A long time after my last post (absorbed by the work to pay the bills) I'm really happy of present my product Promoter in the next ESUG Innovation Technology Awards.

A friendly person, Dr. Noury Bouraqadi will present Promoter in my name because is impossible to me trip to Brussels. Really Thanks You very much Noury!.

The registration page is here.

Promoter isn't an Innovation Technology, but is a proof of concept about one of my big concerns with Squeak: "Bring Squeak to business arena".

Finally today I've got serializing working in Promoter.

I've been in trouble for several days with this because seems that SmartRefStream has some type of bug in 3.7 version.

Must try if works in 3.6 version.
